Extend the life of your janamaz with simple habits — from daily folding to deep cleaning and storage.
A well-made prayer mat can last a decade with modest care. Neglect reduces even the finest weave to a frayed rectangle within a year. The difference is habit.
After each salah, brush the pile lightly with your palm in the direction of the weave to release dust. Fold along the existing crease lines — never roll tightly, which stresses the backing. Store upright in a breathable cotton bag, not sealed plastic, which traps moisture and invites mildew.
Weekly: shake outdoors and leave in indirect sunlight for twenty minutes. UV light naturally disinfects without chemicals. Avoid prolonged direct sun on silk mats, which can fade natural dyes.
Monthly deep clean for velvet and microfiber: vacuum on low suction with upholstery attachment. Spot-clean stains immediately with a damp cloth and mild soap — blot, never rub. Allow to air dry fully before folding.
Wool and silk mats benefit from professional cleaning once a year. Inform the cleaner it is a prayer mat; avoid harsh solvents.
Never machine wash unless the care label explicitly permits it. The mechanical agitation separates pile from backing and ruins qibla alignment.
If the latex base begins to curl, place the mat pile-side down under weighted books for forty-eight hours in a warm room. Often this restores flatness without replacement.
Your mat carries the trace of your prostrations. Care for it as you would care for anything that witnesses your ibadah.
